Moulding fuel blocks.-Briquettes are made from the smalls of coke, anthracite, or other lean fuel with the addition of an inorganic binding- agent, by providing channels, holes, &c. b systematically disposed throughout the briquette in such a manner that the dimension x of the walls bounding such holes &c. does not exceed the burning depth of the mixture. The briquettes a are preferably moulded to the size of an ordinary building brick with longitudinal passages b and with transverse grooves c at top and bottom to facilitate breakage. The binding-agent does not exceed 3-5 per cent, and the mixture is subjected to pressure just sufficient to fashion the briquette without expelling air or forcing binder into the pores of the fuel. As an example, gas coke up to 6 mm. grain with about 25 per cent dust is mixed with 4 per cent sorel cement and briquetted under a pressure of 75 kg. per sq. cm., the permissible burning depth being 1 cm.; with the same materials and a pressure of 25 kg., a burning depth of 2 cm. is obtained.
