Abstract

A pouch 10 is folded from paper to have an elongated, openable mouth 16. The pouch is applied to a wall 19 below a point 20 where drilling is to be carried out by means of a strip 18 of a weak adhesive tape so as to protect a skirting board 21 at the foot of the wall from falling brickdust. After use the pouch is peeled off the wall and the extended top of the rear side 12 is folded over to close the mouth of the pouch and is held by a second strip 17 of adhesive tape on the front side 11 of the pouch. The pouch 10 with its contents safely contained can then be discarded.

Description

BRICKDUST COLLECTOR
This invention relates to a brickdust collector intended for use when drilling into walls.
When drilling into a wall, for example to insert a plug which will accept a screw to mount something such as a cabinet on the wall dust and debris emerge from the hole, probably the most troublesome being red brickdust. The workman may put cloth or paper on the floor but it is generally difficult in this way to protect a skirting board. If brickdust gets onto a painted skirting board it is very difficult to remove. Wiping with a wet cloth simply causes a red smear. Another problem is that if the drill hole is made at a considerable elevation from the floor, for example to mount a curtain rail, the dust will fall over a wide area.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a simple and cheap solution to these problems.
According to the invention there is provided a brickdust collector comprising a pouch with an elongatable open mouth, the pouch having an adhesive strip on its exterior generally parallel with and close to one side of the mouth. In use the adhesive strip is applied to a wall surface horizontally just below the point where drilling is to be carried out and the mouth, having one side elongated along the wall, is pulled open to receive brickdust and other debris from the hole.
The strip is preferably of a weak adhesive, by which is meant the type of adhesive used on "Post It" notes, so that the pouch can be peeled off the wall after use without removing paint or other surfacing material of the wall..
Preferably the side of the pouch to which said strip is applied extends as a flap above the mouth, enabling the flap to be folded over the mouth to close the same after use.
A strip of adhesive tape may be applied to the opposite side of the pouch to hold closed the flap after it is folded down.
Preferably the pouch has concertinaed ends enabling the mouth to be held open.
Means may be provided for holding open the mouth of the pouch, such stiffeners or a spring..
The pouch may be folded from paper or card.
A prcferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of non-limitative example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 illustrates a collector in accordance with the present invention from in front and one side, and Figure 2 is a view on a smaller scale of the collector of Figure 1 in use.
The brickdust collector 10 is folded from paper or card to have a front side 11, a rear side 12 and concatenated ends 13 and 14. The pouch thus formed has a closed bottom 15 and a wide open mouth 16. The rear side 12 of the pouch extends a little higher than the front side 11 to form a flap which can be folded over the mouth 16 to close the same after use. A small strip 17 of adhesive tape is provided on the front side 11 of the pouch to engage the flap when it is folded over to keep the pouch closed.
Along the top of inside of the flap a strip 18 of adhesive tape is applied so as to extend above the flap. In use of the pouch (Figure 2) the exposed area of the strip 18 is applied horizontally to a wall 19 just below a point 20 where drilling is to' be carried out so as to hang the pouch on the wall where its open mouth 16 will catch brickdust and other debris falling from the hole. By virtue of its concertinaed sides 13 and 14 the mouth 16 of the pouch tends to remain open but if desired stiffeners (not shown) or a spring (not shown) may be used to ensure that the mouth remains open while drilling is carried out.
When drilling is finished the strip 18 is peeled off the wall 19. To ensure that it does not removed paint or other wall surfacing material adhesive of the tape 18 is preferably a weak adhesive, by which is meant an adhesive of the type used for "Post It" notes. The flap at the top of the side 12 is now folded over the mouth 16 to close the pouch and then secured by the strip 17.
The collector 10 has protected a painted skirting board 21 at the foot of the wall 19 from falling brickdust, which would otherwise be difficult to remove.
It will be apparent that the shape and construction of the collector 10 can be widely varied provided that it has a mouth which can be elongated along a wall surface. The materials from which it is made are also optional, but it is considered that folding it from paper or card will enable it to be provided very cheaply so that, for example, it could be provided as a complimentary item to DIY customers of drill bits, curtain rails and other wall fittings.
