Abstract
242.615. Withycombe, R. M. Nov. 5, 1924, [Convention date]. Teeth, artificial.-In artificial teeth formed of a porcelain element, a base plate, and a cushion of resilient material, such as soft rubber, arranged between the porcelain and the base plate as described in Specifications 25028/13 and 111,675, the porcelain is hollowed at its base to form a chamber to receive a substantial bulk of the resilient material. The porcelain tooth 1, Fig. 1, is hollowed out at its base to form a chamber 3 and is formed with a bore 2 opening on the occlusal surface and adapted to receive a post 9 secured to a base plate 8. The post may be a rigid member or may consist of two parts united by a hook-and-eye connection 10, and is threaded to engage a nut 12 whereby the tooth is secured in position. A soft rubber pad 5 comprises a central portion 6 filling the chamber 3, and a relatively thin peripheral portion 7 upon which the edges of the tooth 1 rest. The base plate may be a flat member as shown in Fig. 1 or may be flanged to cover the exposed edge of the pad 5. In the case of metal dentures such as bridges the base plate may be constituted by part of the denture. The parts of the tooth may be assembled and the material forming the pad 5 vulcanized before setting up in a vulcanite denture, or during revulcanization in repair work, or after setting up the tooth on a metal denture, and the pad adheres to the base plate and preferably also to the walls of the chamber 3 which may be lined with bakedin metallic filings for this purpose. A hollow space may be formed in the pad 5 at the base of the post 9.
