PAD FOR DENTAL IMPRESSION TRAYS.
Appflication filed February 27, 1924.
To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINoEN'r CU'r'riir'rA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pad for Dental Impression Trays, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to pads for dental impression trays, an object of the invention being to provide a pad composed of spongy material, preferably sponge rubber, which will take up excess moisture and which will readily conform to the shape of the mouth so as to exert but a minimum pressure on the impressions and gums and thus be relatively comfortable and most ef ficient in the making of dental impressions.
The primary object of my invention is, therefore, to provide a pad of sponge rubher and the like which will be supported by the tray either for the upper or lower jaws, and in which pad the plaster of Paris or other material is located so that when the impressions is made the water or saliva will be taken up by the pad, and, furthermore, the pad can be effectually pressed into posi tion without undue discomfort to the patient.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangement of parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an impression tray for the upper jaw, showing my improved pad in position therein;
Figure 2 is a view in transverse section on the line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the pad removed;
Figure 4 is a perspective view illustrating an impression tray for the lower jaw, showing my improved pad in position therein;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the pad illustrated in Figure 4.
Serial No. 695,511.
Referring more particularly to Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, 1 represents an impression tray for the upper jaw, 2 a handle thereon, and 3 an upstanding flange extending around certain edges of the tray. 4 represents my improved impression pad, which is of a shape to conform to the internal contour of the tray 1 with its flange 3, and is securely held and confined in the tray by reason of its shape and the confining flange, as will be readily understood. This pad 4 is preferably composed of sponge rubber of the desired thickness and while, of course, I do not wish to be limited to the use of rubber in a spongy form, as the invention is broad enough to cover any spongy material which will answer for the purpose, yet I believe that sponge rubber is preferable material, but I wish to have it understood that I use this term in its broadest possible sense.
In Figure f an impression tray 6 is illustrated for use in making impressions of the lower jaw, and this tray 6 has a handle 7 thereon with flanges 8 in which my improved pad 9 is located, and conforms in contour to the internal contour of the tray. It is, of course, to be understood that the invention is not limited to the identical shape of the tray or pad but is broadly to the idea of a pad which constitutes a receptacle or mounting to the tray, and in use the plaster of Paris or other material for making the impression is located on the pad and when pressed against the jaw the excess of water and other moisture will be taken up by the pad. Furthermore, the proper pressure may be had without undue discomfort to the patient because of the elasticity and flexibility of the material of the pad which readily conforms to the uneven surface of the mouth, providing an effectual cut-01f for moisture and plaster of Paris and insuring a perfect impression.
Various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my invention, and, hence, I do not limit n'iyself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a pad for dental impression trays composed of sponge rubber, constructed and adapted to removably fit a dental tray, and constituting a support or receptacle for plastic 1naterial in which the impression is to be made. 10
2. The combination with a dental impression tray, of a pad oi. sponge rubber fitting the tray and constituting a support or receptacle for plastic material in which the impression is to be made.
VINCENT CUT'II'VIXK.
