DENTAL lMPRESSlON-CUP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,407, dated. January 6, 1885.

Application filed April 11, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AMAZIAH GARNER, of Lynchburg, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Instruments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in dental instruments, and more particularly to impression-cups used for taking impressions of the gums. Heretofore in connection with these devices beeswax has been used for the purpose of preventing the escape of material used in the cups before placing it in the mouth, the wax to be sufficiently pliable to allow the escape of surplus material when the cup is pressed on the gums. able feature of the cup is the beeswax, which is unadapted to the use and necessitates a great amount of time and labor to prepare it. Again, besides being expensive, it makes an unsightly appearance, and is quite an unpleasant article to handle or work, rendering the hands unfit to touch the mouth of the patient, and therefore necessitating the frequent washing of the hands.

The object of my invention is to do away with beeswax, and thereby overcome the above objectionable feature; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the use of soft rubber or other suitable material of sufficient strength and pliability, so constructed as to form rims to cups by being formed to fit the back part or .open ends of cups by lapping over on the bottom and sides and standing perpendicular to, or nearly so, across the open ends of the cups.

My invention further consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, to be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

A represents a cup used for taking impressions of the upper gums, and formed of any suitable size and shape, and B the handle thereof. 7

To the sides 0 of the cup A, and to the bottom thereof, are secured or formed integral therewith the staples or catches D, staples similar to which are also formed on the cup E, used for taking impressions of the lower gums. The staples are formed near the ends of the cup E, and are preferably three in number, as shown in the drawings.

F is an elastic band, preferably made of soft rubber, to which are secured pins or keys G, adapted to fit in the staples D, and hold the said rubber in proper position. In Fig. l is shown the elastic end piece secured to a cup for taking impressions of the upper gums, the upper edge being cut to conform to the shape of the roof of the mouth. This end piece can be quickly removed or replaced, and being soft readily partakes of the shape of the roof of the month if pressed against it.

In Fig. 4 is shown an end piece for the impression-cup shown in Fig. 3, the keys or pins being secured to the rubber in any desired manner. By this construction the rubber dam overlaps the edges of the cup and prevents the escape of the material used therein. This is cheaper, neater, and more effective than wax, and requires much less time to apply or remove it from the cup.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with an impression-cup provided with staples or eyes, of a rubber or other elastic dam provided with pins or keys adapted to enter said staples or eyes and keep the dam in proper position, substantially as set forth.
