Abstract
242,418. Baker, G. Oct. 20, 1924. Axial rolling.-An axle is rolled to shape with journals and/or collars between three or more rolls 5, 6, and 7 provided with non-continuous raised segments 7<2> with tapered ends. The upper roll 7 is mounted in a sliding block 9 for adjusting the pass by a lever system and an eccentric 15 rotated e.g. by hydraulic cylinders acting on a rack and pinion. The roll 7 is flexibly connected by universal joints 28 to a pinion driven shaft 21, while the lower rolls 5 are connected by ordinary couplings to similar shafts, the three pinions being driven by a central pinion on a shaft 30 rotated in one direction or oscillated by hydraulic power through a rack and pinion 31. The apparatus may also be used for smoothing and planishing roughly forged axles.
