Abstract

A gender-specific product, particularly a toothpaste or mouthwash, comprises either relatively more ''male'' flavours/perfumes (e.g. mint, liquorice, aniseed, pear, avocado, citronel, orange, apple, lychee, pineapple, lemon) or relatively more ''female'' flavours/perfumes (e.g. jasmine, strawberry, raspberry, jojoba, coconut, lavender, juniper, vanilla, lilac, rosemary, mild lemon, orange, apple, pineapple, lychee, mint). A ''male'' product may also contain stronger flavours than a ''female'' one, have a higher anti-odour chemical content and have a higher concentration of eugenol as odour suppressant. The product may also be a tooth balm, ointment or mousse for overnight use as a coating on the teeth or may be a floss, spray, gum, dental fixative etc.

Gender-specific toothpastes and oral hygiene products are necessary because as the requirements of the various other personal hygiene products such as deodorants, shower gels, aftershaves and hair products are different for men and women, so should the formulations and odours and flavours of their oral hygiene products.
The products: Unique product: Fragranced and non-fragranced Tooth Balm The unique "Fragranced/no fragranced Tooth Balm", is an aqueous gel containing fluoride and eugenol for use over night as a coating o the teeth as no product currently exists for use in the eight hours or so that we are asleep to offset bad breath. It is a balm for use on the teeth, incorporating fluoride and perfumes so that when we wake up our breath smells naturally fresh, or at least better than it would have without it.

Anti-bacterials Mouthwash: Eugenol Chiorhexidine gluconate Aqua Sodium Fluoride Alcohol Sorbotil Xylitol Benzoic acid Preservatives Perfumes Flavourants Colourants Soduim Saccharin Anti-bacterials Eugenol Rationale: Personal odours are governed not only by our personal perspiration/sweating, greasy hair, the odour of foods that we eat, our amount of physical activity and the environment in which we work/live/socialise. Our oral odours are a fundamental part of our overall personal odour. Mouth breathing forms a large part of our physiologic breathing process and therefore, like perspiration/sweating the way in which we offset oral odours should be as individual to the gender we are as our deodorant, shower gel, perfumes and aftershaves and other personal hygiene products.
* Genders are completely different in terms of personal odour and these odours are not homogenous. Basic hormonal differences exist between and even within the genders which are responsible for giving off personal odours, and therefore oral hygiene products should take this into account.
* There are external and internal causes of our oral odours. External include mainly the foods we eat and drink. It is these external sources of oral odours that normal oral hygiene products and breath set out to offset. However, internal causes of oral odours include, male/female hormones, time of day/night. No oral hygiene products exist that distinguish these facts which is why so many people feel that their breath is still not fresh after brushing as these facts are ignored. Different face creams exist for morning and night time use because the needs of the skin are different in the day and in the night. Similarly, the needs of oral hygiene products differ between day and night time use as the bacterial activity of the mouth varies from day to night.
* Men and women's breath does not smell the same therefore requirements of toothpastes are different for both sexes. Men require stronger smelling shower gels deodorants and even hair gels whereas women require softer smelling products.
* Men have stronger masculine smell of breath similar to their general body odours and women have less strong smells of breath.
* Requirements of toothpastes for the different sexes are different just like requirements of deodorants, hair gels and other personal hygiene products.
* Most mainstream toothpastes on the market today are mint flavoured.
Although other flavours exist there is no distinction between those that men should use and those that women use. (0
During my time practicing dentistry, I have found that the oral odours given off by male patients differ from those of female patients and therefore there should be a specific range of toothpaste available for people of both sexes.
* While many different flavours of toothpaste exist, none exists that distinguish male from female usage and the public is not guided to buying gender specific oral hygiene products.
* The time of day also governs what out individual breaths smell like. For example, morning breath is a well known phenomenon characterised by a strong unpleasant odour. This is because, bacteria and residues of food and debris stagnate in the mouth over night and create this unpleasant smell over the course of the average eight hours we sleep. However, no oral hygiene products on the market take his into account by manufacturing specific products to prevent or remedy this problem. There is a clear indication for creating a night time toothpaste which will prevent the occurrence of this unpleasant odour for both females and males.
Daytime breath usually is not so strong and a milder form of toothpaste could be used for daytime use.
Proposals: Male Oral Hy2iene Products to have: 1. Stronger flavours 2. Higher anti-odour chemical content to offset stronger smelling breath of males 3. More male flavours and perfumes, mint, liquorice, aniseed, pear, avocado pear, citronel, orange, apple, lychee, pineapple, lemon, flavours/perfumes used in male deodorants and aftershaves and others to be added at later date as I see fit.
4. Use of Eugenol as an odour suppressant at a higher concentration than that in female toothpaste.
Female Oral Hygiene Products to have: 1. Milder flavours/perfumes 2. Lower anti-odour chemical content (Eugenol) 3. More female flavour, jasmine, strawberry, raspberry, mild Jemon orange apple pineapple lychee mint flavours, jojoba, coconut, lavender, juniper, vanilla, lilac, rosemary and other herbal and fruit flavours as I see fit.
Night time gender-specific Oral Hygiene Products: 1. Higher anti-odour chemical content 2. Different flavours 3. Higher anti-bacterial content due to higher bacterial activity at night and higher degree of food stagnation and debris stagnation in the mouth at night.
4. Greater saliva stimulating properties to last throughout the night as this helps prevent against bacteria and decay and oral pathological conditions in the mouth 5. Normal fluoride content as no known benefit to increasing fluoride content of toothpaste.
6. Higher concentration of eugenol than day time version.
Day time gender-specific Oral Hygiene Products: 1. Lower anti-odour chemical content 2. Different flavours 3. Lower anti-bacterial content due to lesser umber of bacteria in the mouth in the day and less stagnation of food and debris in the mouth in the day.
4. Lesser saliva stimulating properties as saliva is stimulated throughout the day by normal chewing activities, appetite, thoughts of food and eating/drinking 5. Same fluoride content as no benefit to increasing the does of fluoride 6. Lesser eugenol content than that of night-time usage products.
