Abstract
242,285. Perrin, J. B., and Paquier, J. A. Oct. 29, 1924, [Convention date]. Seals and sealing.-A metal seal, for use for example in sealing postal bags fastened by a cord or rope, comprises a disc 1. Figs. 1 and 2, provided with inner and outer flanges 4, 10 forming an annular groove 3, and thickened portions 5, 8 separated by a radial slit, the portion 5 being bored to have one end of the cord permanently secured therein. The flange 4 is higher than the flange 10. The seal may be made of lead, iron or other material. In order to seal a package or postal bag, the cord is fastened around in the usual manner, and the free end 9<1> of the cord is then placed within the annular groove 3 around the inner flange 4 and passed out through the slit between the portions 5, 8. The cord may be tightened by pulling it in a direction towards the base of the seal. The seal is closed, as shown in Fig. 5, by forcing the flange 4, 10 successively down upon the cord by means of a two-part die, Fig. 6, comprising a lower portion 11 provided with a central conical projection 14 which is adapted to be passed through a central aperture 2 in the seal, and an upper portion 16, provided with a central aperture 18 corresponding to the conical projection in the lower portion. The lower portion 11 of the die has an annular groove 12 with recesses 13 to receive the thickened portions 5, 8 of the seal, and the upper portion 16 has an annular ridge 17 and grooves shaped to bend the flanges of the seal in the proper sequence. The two portions of the die are placed between the two jaws 19, 20 of a clamping-device, the jaw 19 being provided with a mandrel 21 which projects through the aperture 18 into a socket 15 in the conical portion 14 of the lower die. The two ends of a cord may be secured within the annular groove of a seal which is modified by dispensing with the cavity for permanently fixing one end of the cord.
