WILLIAM I. PUN'I'E, OF SYRACUSE, NEW XORK, ASSIGNOB T OONTINENTALCAH rm, me, on NEW YORK, N. 2.,
A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK un'rnon or SEALING METAL CONTAINER Application filed June 29,
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in metal containers, and more particularly to the method of sealing metal containers. It has been a common expedient in the art to provide the body portion of a metal container with a horizontally projecting flange and the cover portion'for the containerwith a similar horizontally projecting flange, which overlies the flange on the body portion, to place a sealing material between the flanges and secure the flanges by a sealing strip which embraces both flanges. It is diflicult to obtain a proper seal in a container of this type and also to secure the sealing hand to the projecting flanges so that it will hold the flanges in tight sealing contact with in full lines the, cover in its normal condition.
and before it is applied to the container body, and in broken lines, the cover as applied to the container body but, before the sealing strip has been attached for sealing the container; Fig. 3 is a view showing in broken lines one way of applyinga sealing strip and in full lines the position of the sealing strip when the container is sealed, and Fig. 4 is a view showing the method of at taching a slightly different form of sealing strip, and the sealing of the container.
The container includes a body portion indicated at 1' in the drawing. The body portion has one end thereof closed by a container end 2 which is secured to the body portion-by 1931. Serial No. 547,734.
a double seam 3. Thebod portion at the other end thereof is provide with a flange 4. The container body is closed by a cover or end 5. having a central depressed portion 6 which fits within the body portion. Said cover also so has a projecting flange 7 which is curved so as to provide a channel 8 on its under face. The cover is inverted and the channel filled with a sealing material 9. After the sealing material is set, it is retained within the channel and the cover may be inverted and applied to the container. The flange 4 has a horizontal face extending substantially from the point 4 to thepoint 4P at the extreme outer edge of the flange; The cover flan e is curved from the point 7 to the point which forms the channel 8T0]: the'sealing material. The flange of the cover or end 5 when curved or in its normal condition, is of less maximum diameter than the flange i of the body, and therefore, when the coveris inserted in the body, the extreme outer edge 7" of the cover or end will engage the flange 4 substantially at the point 4. After the cover has been placed on the container body,
.asealing strip 10 is applied to the cover.
The sealing strip 10, as shown in Fig. 3, has the side portions thereof arranged substantially at Eight angles to each other. Pressure is applie to the upper portion ofthe sealing strip so as to force the flange 7 of the cover into a horizontal position. This will squeeze the sealing material outward and inward, thus making a very tight seal between the two flanges. The under sideportion 11 of the I sealing strip is then forced underneath the lower flange so as to tightly grip and hold the flanges in parallel relation, after the pressure has been relieved from the upper face of the sealing strip. The sealingstrip is gripped by 85 the tendency of the curved-flange to spring back to its curved condition, and this will hold the sealing strip firmly connected to the parallel projecting flanges. The sealing strip also will hold the flange 7 in its horizontal 9Q position, pressing against the sealing material, and thus forming a very tight sea In Fig. 4 of the drawing, a slightly different method of attaching a sealing strip to b the flanges of the container is shown. In this form of the invention, the sealing strip is substantially V-shape in cross section, and isrolled into hook fornf, and then laced around the flanges of the can body an the can end or cover. The can body with the cover placed thereon with the sealing strip in place, is positioned in the lower die ring 13. The upper die ring 14 is lowered, and the portion 14' thereof brought into contact with the sealing strip. The relative movement of the die. rings will force the upper and lower portions of the sealing strip 'into contact with the flanges, and will straighten the curved flange on the cover,
on the cover, when curved being of less diameter than the flange-on the container body, so as to rest thereon when the cover is applied to the container body, placing a lastic sealing material in the channel and t e cover on the container bod and sealing the container by applyin a sea strip thereto which embraces the anges d rid forces the curved flange on the cover into parallelism with the horizontal flange on the container body. w

bringing said flanges and the sealing 'stripinto the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3. The same tight grip of the'sealing strip on the flanges is obtained, and the same tight sealing ofthe container rodueed.
It is obvious otherwise applied to the container. The essential feature, however, of the method consists in the curving of the flange on the end to form a channel or pocket for the sealing material, and the forming of the flange on the body substantially horizontal, so that it will cooperate with the sealing strip, when applied, to straighten out the flange on the cover or can' end, and thus press the sealing material into intimate contact with the parts, producing a closure which is not only a tighty sealed closure, but one which may be readi-' ly opened by a horizontal force applied in an outward direction on the sealing strip.
