Abstract
240,506. Roadrails, Ltd., and Dutton, r. H. May 1, 1924. Rail-and-road vehicles, guiding by rails. - A power driven reversible locomotive or tractor for service on roads and rails and having one or more pairs of driving wheels or endless tracks running on the road and a rail bogie at either end for steering on rails, is composed of readily separable units preferably connected to one another by a transverse axis and each separably connectible into a road unit for transport on ordinary roads. The complete vehicle, Figs. 1 and 2, is composed of a power driven section 1 and a non-propelling section 2 pivoted to the section 1. The power driven section 1 is supported upon road wheels 5 or endless tracks and upon a bogie 3, the bogie connection consisting of a ball on the bogie and a socket on the main frame. The bogie 13 at the other end supports the frame 2 carrying a tank 29 connected to the end of the frame 1 by a transverse axis 17 which consists of a squared axle 18, Fig. 3, clamped between the lower ends of brackets 19 and cups 23, the ends of the axle 18 being cylindrical and carried in bearings in hangers 15 on the frame 1. For road transport, the bogies are replaced by two wheeled units having a dropped axle 26 and a central ball 27, Fig. 6, below the centres of the wheels and engaging the socket on the main frame. When the frame 2 is disconnected from the frame 1, a two wheeled road unit with a squared axle is clamped in postion in place of the squared spindle 18. Buffers 41 are rigidly connected to the main frames by means of U-shaped straps 43 and ties 42. Draw bars 44 with tension and compression springs 45, 46 are provided. The bogies, Fig. 9, are constructed with one axle carried in bearings rigid with the inverted channel frame 32 and another axle 38 connected by a longitudinal pivot 36 with the frame 32 so as to ensure contact of all four wheels with the rails without the use of bearing springs.
