Clutches, free-wheel. - In a free - wheel clutch with roller grips, means are provided for lifting the grips out of contact in free-wheeding. The application to engine starting-gear is shown, 1, Fig. 1, being the starting-shaft and 5 the engine shaft. In starting, a wheel 3 drives a disc 7 through rollers 8 in the direction of the arrows C, D. Fig. 2. The rollers 8 are held in a cage 10 which is lightly gripped frictionally by the disc 7 on the engine shaft. When the engine starts, the disc 7 overruns. The cage 10 is carried with the disc 7 ahead of the wheel 3 far enough to cause the locsened rollers 8 to ride. up on a set of shelves 15 projecting from the wheel 3. The wheel 3 comes to rest and the rollers 8 are out of contact with the rotating parts.
