Vacuum tubes.-A valve has a gas filling at a critical pressure such that a sharply-defined luminous aureole is produced around the electrodes during operation. The bulb is highly evacuated and the gas admitted to the required pressure, for instance 0.1 to 1 mm. of mercury in the case of hydrogen. An oxide-coated filament may be used. It is stated that the luminous discharge produces a photo-electric effect on the filament. The vacuum may be regulated by gas absorbing and evolving substances.
