Abstract

Alarms operated by expansion of gases.-- In a fire-alarm of the kind operated by the expansion of a gas under abnormal heat conditions, the air reservoir 1 communicates by an aperture 6 with a tube 3 in which a piston-like member 4 is loosely slidable. The member 4 has a bevelled face which normally rests on an insulated contact 5 and completes an electric circuit through the tube 3 to a second contact 8. In use, if a temperature is gradual, the expanding air escapes between the member 4 and the tube 3 and to the atmosphere by a vent 9. A sudden rise in temperature forces the member 4 from the contact 5, breaking the circuit and operating an alarm. In modifications, the tube 3 is placed at the side of the reservoir 1 and is bent at a right or obtuse angle, and the member 4 may be arranged to close the circuit to operate the alarm.
