Abstract

487,345. Thermal switches ; fire - alarms. SIDDALL, J., and SIDDALL, W. H. Dec. 15, 1936, No. 34410. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Groups XXI and XXXVIII] In a fire-alarm system comprising a length of tubing 1 passing through the area to be protected and terminating in one or more diaphragm chambers or the like 7 adapted to close a bell circuit at 9, 10 when the air in the tubing expands owing to the fire, the tubing communicates with a chamber 4 containing an electric heater 6 which may be energized by a current to test the systems. This fluid system may also be combined with an electric circuit including a conductor 19 which is fixed alongside the tubing 1 preferably in the same covering 3, a battery 17 and thermal devices 20 which open when heated, by the fire and break the circuit to a relay 21 causing an alarm 25 to be sounded. To test the fluid system a switch 15 is moved over causing the current from the battery 17 to pass through the tubing 1 and the heating coil 6 causing the air to expand and close the contacts 9, 10 in an alarm circuit 12. The tubing 1 has vents 14 to allow the pressure in the tubing gradually to become equal to atmospheric pressure. In modifications the chamber 4 has two compartments connected by a small aperture and with a separate heater for each compartment.
