Electric alarm systems; alarms operated by expansion of solids.-A fire or temperature alarm is arranged to be non-effective in the event of gradual rise in temperature. A composite strip comprising a heat-insulating plate b interposed' between metallic plates a, c having the same coefficient of expansion is mounted over a troughshaped member d of a material which does not conduct heat or electricity. The strip at one end carries a terminal f and at the other end contacts with a screw i in a conducting block g carrying a terminal h. When a gradual rise in temperature occurs, the plates a and c expand equally and no distortion occurs. On a sudden rise of temperature, the plate c heats first and the strip bends and breaks the circuit. The circuit includes a source of current and an electromagnet which normally holds raised a pivoted contact piece. When the circuit is broken, the contact piece is released and closes a second circuit which includes the source of current and a warning device such as a bell.
