Bell-operating mechanism, electric. - The armature rocks on the rounded end f of the permanent magnet e to which it is held solely by magnetic attraction. The armature is guided by pins h carried by screws i passing through one limb of a U-shaped non-magnetic bracket d. The pins pass through a hole k and a slot k<1> in the armature and abut against the end of the magnet, the hole and slot being so shaped that only the end of the pins is ever in contact with the armature. The air-gap between the armature and the pole pieces b' of the electromagnets is adjustable by means of the screws j, which move the magnet e, in guides formed by tongues p and by a slot o in the bracket, against a spring q passing through a hole s in the magnet and secured to tongues r on the bracket. The hole s is shaped so that the spring q holds the magnet against the base of the bracket. The ends of the electromagnets remote from the armature are provided with pole pieces b<2> clamped between the cores b and the limb d<2> of the bracket. These pole pieces may rest against the magnet e, or a small air-gap may be left. The striker is carried by a springy rod l. The armature may be biassed by the end x of a helical spring in a hollow screw v. The bracket can be stamped from sheet metal, and is provided with a slot d' for giving access to the leads.
