Abstract

Separating by gravity.-Liquids of different specific gravity, e.g. fuel oil and water, are separated by flowing the mixture through a tank T so that it passes from the inlet a in a sinuous path between parallel plates b so inclined that the line of greatest slope is diagonal. The oil collects in the trihedral angles k, k formed with the sides l, l<1>, and issues into a trunk g and through an overflow h. The water passes by a trunk e and a slot j to an outlet f. A valve may be fitted to regulate the level in the tank, heating coils may be arranged in the trunk g, the corners of the apparatus may be rounded to reduce turbulence, and the tank may be closed and upright pipes fitted to the discharges f, h so that the apparatus works under pressure.
