Spray burners. - An atomizer for liquid fuel comprises an outer tubular member within which is mounted a tube into which liquid is admitted where it is acted on by two currents of air or steam, one having a longitudinal and the other a whirling motion. Figs. 1 and 4 show a form in which a tube b closed at one end by a plug e through which passes a liquid-supply tube d has mounted within it a tube c provided with a longitudinal opening g formed to give a tangential direction to air passing through it. Compressed air is admitted to the annular space between the two tubes and part passes in the direction of the arrows 2, part passes through the opening g and is given a whirling motion, and a further amount passes between the tube c and nozzle a. The admission of air in the tube c is regulated by a screwed sleeve h. Figs. 5 and 6 show a modification in which two inner tubes i, c are employed. Air is admitted to the outer annular space and liquid through the port j to the space between the two tubes. Air passes from the outer space to the space between the two tubes and also into the inner tube c whence it passes through the tangential passage g to the inner annular space so that the liquid is acted on both by a longitudinal and whirling air jet. The admission of air to the tube c is regulated bv the screwed plug h and to the inner annulus by the plug e.
