Universal joints comprise torque arms on the shaft ends of different lengths connected by non- metallic flexible material having imbedded tension cords disposed tangentially of the arc of movement of the shorter torque arm. Thus the flexible fabricated plate c may be connected to a pair of longer torque arms a<1> on one shaft a and to a coupling plate b<1> forming torque arms of less diameter on the other shaft b. Tension cords d are arranged tangentially to the path of coupling bolts b<2>. The cords are preferably in one continuous piece.
