Abstract

236,902. Nooten, A. H. van July 10, 1924, [Convention date]. Tea manufacture. - The withering or limping and drying of freshly plucked or fermented tealeaves is effected in a revolving drum 2 to which fresh heated air is supplied and in which a partial vacuum is maintained, the drum being provided internally with blades so that a continuous shower of the leaves passes through the heated air. The air is supplied from a pipe 7 passing through a heater 6. The pipe has test valves 8, 18 and a vacuum gauge 9, and is connected through a stuffing box 10 to the drum 2. The drum is connected through a stuffing box 11 and pipe 12 to a waterjet exhaust pump 13. The drum is rotated by means of fast and loose pulleys 4, 5, and has tightly fitting flap-valves 3 through which the leaf is charged from a hopper 1, and finally discharged into a conveyer 19. The temperature of the air current for withering may be about 40‹ C., and for the first part of the drying about 120‹ C., and for the remainder about 140‹ C.
