Abstract

471,888. Tobacco. AZARIAN, A. Dec. 9, 1935, No. 34116. Convention date, Dec. 10, 1934. [Class 130] To improve its quality and aroma and to reduce the nicotine content, tobacco is subjected, preferably with the exclusion of air, to an artificial fermentation by adding a fermentation accelerator consisting wholly or mainly of essential oils, the temperature being raised to 25‹ C. or more, and the fermentation process being repeated one or more times with intermediate admission of air and cooling. The fermentation accelerator mav consist of pure anethole or aniseed oil or a mixture of both. For the final stage of treatment, a mixture of aniseed oil, anethole, amber oil, cognac, cinnamon oil and lemon oil in water may be employed. For inferior and diseased tobaccos the treatment may be carried out at a temperature of 60-70‹ C. In the apparatus shown in the Figure, the tobacco is placed between perforated end walls 4, 5 in a drum 1 rotatable in end supports 2, 3 and provided with a thermometer 25 and a moisture indicator 26. The treating liquid is contained in a receptacle 19 provided with an electric heater 23, a thermometer 21 and a pressure conduit 24 and is introduced into the tobacco through a perforated tube 14. The drum is closed in an air-tight manner and slowly rotated by a motor, while heated to 25 or 30‹ C. by means of steam or hot air admitted to a jacket 9. Liquid from the container 19, heated to 35‹ C., is sprayed in through the tube 14 while the tobacco is heated to 35‹ C. After some hours, the heating is stopped and a cover 28 opened to admit air while the drum is slowly rotated. The drum is then stopped, the cover 11 opened and air blown through by the fan 8. The tobacco is allowed to stand for 5- 6 hours and the drum is again closed and the treatment repeated. In a modified form of apparatus, bales of tobacco are placed on shelves in a stationary chamber, the treating liquid being distributed by means of a tube provided with a nozzle. A solution of lemon oil may be spread over the bottom of the chamber, which is provided with heating means and vaporizes the lemon oil.
