Abstract

Motor vehicle rear brake lights which remain illuminated on the stopped vehicle until the vehicle moves forward or reverses.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> Idea for patent - Changes to illumination of the motor vehicle rear braking system.
At the moment when a driver needs to slow down and stop his/her vehicle he/she applies the foot brake pedal. This action operates a switch which illuminates the rear brake light(s). When the driver begins to move, either forward or reverse, once the brake pedal is released the rear brake light illumination is cancelled.
From experience I feel a safer way would be for the brake light to remain illuminated until the vehicle moves in a forward or reverse gear. This is illustrated in the following examples: Example 1 - Motorway Driving When traffic is stationary, on one or more of the lanes of a motorway, it would assist the drivers of vehicles approaching from behind to know if the vehicle in front is still stationary or has, infact, started to move for forward.
If the brake lights continued to be illuminated the following vehicle would see one or several brake lights on warning him of the possibility that the vehicle is infact stationary. This would greatly assist drivers when visibility is reduced in foggy weather conditions.
Example 2 - Drivers wishing to carry out right-hand turns When a driver wishes to carry out a right-hand turn, he/she would approach the junction; start to indicate to the right; slow down and may stop in the right hand side of his/her lane waiting until the road ahead was clear to be able to continue his/her manoeuvre. If the driver has stopped, applied the hand brake and has the car in neutral there are no brake lights illuminated.
If the brake lights were illuminated, until the vehicle started to move in a forward or backward direction, this would greatly assist the driver, approaching from behind, and would alert him that the car is infact stationary whilst still indicating his/her intention to make a right turn. Therefore being an important factor in alerting following traffic and assisting in the reduction of accidents.

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A change to the illumination of the motor vehicle rear braking system so that the brake light or lights remain illuminated until the vehicle moves in a forward or reverse manner.
  2. 2. Claim as in claim 1 in the event that when traffic is stationary, for example in one or more lanes of a motorway or carriageway, this type of illumination would alert drivers approaching from behind to the fact that the vehicle in front was braking or was stationary.
  3. 3. As in claim 2 in the event that visibility is reduced or impaired in poor weather conditions.
  4. 4. As in claim 1 in the event of the driver of a stationary vehicle waiting to make a right or left turn then the driver of a following vehicle would be alerted that the vehicle infront was either braking or was stationary.
