Abstract

A lighting system is provided in the signalling vehicle permitting the driver to alert following traffic of his intention to brake and turn, prior to applying the brakes, but after the direction indicator has been activated. This intention is conveyed to following traffic by means of a manually operated switch which illuminates at least one red lamp on the rear of the vehicle in conjunction with the already-activated direction indicator; such operation being at driver's will through deliberate-digital pressure, on the conventional indicator-switch stalk on the steering column, thus allowing continuous or intermittent use of the said red lamp(s). Without this pressure, the switch remains in, or returns to, the "indicate only" position until cancelled. The system is designed for both Left and Right Turns. The said red lamp(s) is (are) not operated when the direction indicator is used to indicate an overtaking manoeuvre, so that a following driver can distinguish between turn and overtaking indications. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVED ROAD-VEHICLE SIGNALLING SYSTEM This invention relates to a road-vehicle signalling system.
In the United Kingdom, that part of the "Highway Code" dealing with "Signals to other road users", pages 51 and 52, shows that the direction-indicator signals fail to differentiate between a driver's intention to move out to the right and to "turn right" without also giving the recommended re-inforcing hand signals. As a consequence, traffic following a vehicle showing only the "right" indicator signal is in doubt whether the signalling vehicle intends to accelerate and overtake the vehicle ahead, or decelerate and brake prior to direction change. Only when the footbrake is applied, illuminating the stoplamps, is an imminent right-turn made clear.
This lack of clarity results in hazardous driving situations especially on dual-carriageways and major roads serving motorways where a right turn may not be anticipated. (On a motorway all right-indicate signals show an intention to overtake; right turns being prohibited).
In countries where they drive on the right-hand side of the road, a similar confusion pertains when a vehicle indicates "Left".
According to the present invention, a lighting system is provided in the signalling vehicle permitting the driver to alert following traffic of his intention to brake and turn, prior to applying the brakes, but after the indicator has been activated. This intention is conveyed to following traffic by means of a manually operated switch which illuminates at least one red lamp on the rear of the vehicle in conjunction with the already-activated direction indicator; such operation being at driver's will through deliberate digital pressure, on the conventional indicator-switch stalk on the steering column, thus allowing continuous or intermittent use of the said red lamp(s). Without this pressure, the switch remains in, or returns to, the "indicate only" position until cancelled. The system is designed for both Left and Right Turns.
An example of the system in use is now described: Vehicle "A" (the leading vehicle) intends to decelerate, brake and turn to the right. The driver first activates the direction-indicator signal to "right". Vehicle "B" (the following vehicle) is close behind and unsure of "A's" intention. "A" is aware of "B's" proximity and decides to alert "B" of his intention to brake by operating the manual switch which illuminates at least one red lamp on the rear of his vehicle. "B" is thus alerted, decelerates giving "A" extra vehicle space to brake and effect the right-turn safely. The system emulates the practice of "pumping the brakes" but without any speed reduction of the signalling vehicle.

Claims (7)

  1. IMPROVED ROAD VEHICLE SIGNALLING SYSTEM
CLAINS 1. A Signalling system for road vehicles whereby the driver of a vehicle, having activated either of the direction-indicator signals, can alert following traffic of an intention to brake prior to direction change.
  2. 2. A signalling system as claimed in Claim 1 whereby the alert signal comprises illumination of at least one red lamp showing rearwards of the signalling vehicle and visible to following traffic.
  3. 3. A signalling system as claimed in Claims 1 and 2 whereby the alert signal is activated at driver's will through deliberate digital pressure on a switch, permitting continuous or intermittent illumination of the lamp(s).
  4. 4. A signalling system as claimed in Claims 1, 2 and 3 whereby the digitally-operated switch is mounted on the steering-column of the vehicle.
  5. 5. A signalling system as claimed in Claims 1, 2, 3 and 4 adapted on the vehicle to driving either side of the road.
  6. 6. A signalling system as hereintofore described modified in detail so as to conform to statutory Road Control Conditions.
  7. 7. A signalling system substantially as claimed in any of the preceedings claims and as described with reference to the drawing.
