Abstract
A direction and hazard indication lighting system for a vehicle having individual directional indicator lights and hazard warning lights in order that drivers intentions are more plainly signalled. This light arrangement may also have separate patterns of flashing for directional and hazard indication.
Description
-- 2428776 Title Jiazard lights / indicator lights modification for motor
vehicles.
Background
On motor vehicles, the current convention is to use the orange indicator' lights for both hazard lights' and indicator' function. Where only one side or even one corner of a vehicle is visible and the orange indicator' lights are flashing it is not possible to differentiate between these two separate functions.
Many such situations would include: * In a line of parked vehicles or near a junction, vehicle indicating shows driver intends to join traffic flow OR showing hazard lights if stationary or broken-down.
* In fast moving traffic on highway, indicators would show lane changing whilst hazard lights would suggest hold-up or emergency ahead.
Without the modification as stated, confusion and compromise of safety can result.
Statement of invention
This modification allows the driver's intention to be fully understood by other road users, even if only one corner of the vehicle is visible, thus improving road safety.
Claims (1)
- The mod jflcation requires: * simple re-programming of the flasher unit * an additional orange light to be incorporated in the layout of existing lights (sidelight, headlight, brake light etc) at each corner of the vehicle.* new cars would have the additional lights incorporated in the overall design of the vehicle. See figs I / I and 1 /2.* At each corner of the vehicle there would be an upper and lower orange light. See figs 1 / 1 and 1 /2.* Any additional indicators' on the vehicle, ie on external door mirrors, to flash in unison with indicator' mode, or hazard' mode.* Existing vehicles could have additional orange lights and replacement flasher units offered for DIY installation via motor accessory retail businesses.Advantages Difference between hazard lights' and indicators' can easily be identified by other road users, and driver's intention understood without confusion.Claim 1 Vehicle lighting unit / arrangement of lights to be designed to include second orange (indicator) light.Claim 2 When switched to indicator' (for left or right turn) both upper and lower orange lights, and any repeater' lights such as on door mirrors) to flash in unison.Claim 3 When switched to hazards' each pair of orange lights (at each corner of the vehicle) flash in the sequence..all upper orange lights' / all lower orange lights / all upper orange lights / all lower orange lights all upper orange lights' / all lower orange lights / all upper orange lights / all lower orange lights,,,, etc. Claim 4 Rate offlasbuig in all cases as per current regulations
