Abstract
The process of the parent Specification is modified by the introduction of the b -chlorallyl instead of the b -bromallyl group. For this purpose 1-halogen-2-chloro-2 : 3-propylene is employed or there may be used a compound CH2 X. CHCl. CH2 X (in which X represents halogen), hydrogen halide being eliminated. The products show pronounced hypnotic activity. According to the example, b -monochlorallylisopropylbarbituric acid is prepared by heating a solution of isopropylbarbituric acid in caustic soda with 1 : 2-dichloro-2 : 3-propylene or by treating the sodium salt of isopropylbarbituric acid with 1-bromo-2-chloro-2 : 3-propylene.
