Abstract

235,901. Meller, R. June 23, 1924, [Convention date]. Rotary converters; exciting. - A rotary converter is provided, in addition to the shunt field winding E, with one or more supplementary windings F which as a whole assist the secondary continuous-current armature field and which magnetize the main poles over their complete polar surfaces. It is explained in the Specification that the continuous-current voltage falls as the excitation of the winding F is increased. In one arrangement giving a drooping voltage characteristic and suitable for arc welding &c., the winding F is connected in series with the load and in parallel with an adjustable resistance. A constant adjustable voltage may be obtained by connecting the supplementary winding across the brushes a, b in series with a rheostat. These two arrangements may be combined so as to give a rising or a falling characteristic. Fig. 6 shows a machine in which the shunt winding E is concentrated around the poles and the supplementary windings are distributed in slots in such a way as not to surround the commutating poles W. In small constructions, both windings are concentrated.
