Abstract
235,650. Royce, F. H. March 21, 1924. Addition to 222,162, [Class 103 (i), Brakes &c.]. Gearing for stopping and starting machinery.- In a friction clutch device for effecting the application of brakes on a motor vehicle by the road wheels of the vehicle, and in which an auxiliary brake is applied simultaneously with the clutch, a shaft c mounted by bearings c<2>, c' in the gear-box a<4> and carrying a pinion c<1> by which it is geared to the road wheels has secured thereto by means of a flange c<6> a plate c<12> forming the driving member of the clutch. The driven members of the clutch comprise a plate d<3> secured to a shaft d and a plate d' slidable on the shaft and coupled to the plate d<3> by interengaging projections d<5>. The shaft d is supported by a bearing d<1> in the end of the shaft c and a bearing d<2> in a fixed plate p. A sleeve e<1> freely mounted on the shaft d and provided with an arm e connected to the driver's operating pedal has external spiral serrations thereon in engagement with similar serrations on a sleeve f<1> having an arm f. The sleeves e', f<1> abut respectively through thrust-bearings e<2>, f<1> against the hub of the clutch disc d<4> and a nut f<4> fixed on the end of the shaft d. The clutch discs d<3>, d' are connected by a link to the brakeoperating transmission gear. When the driver's pedal is depressed the sleeve e<1> is turned and carries with it the sleeve f<1> whereby brakes connected to the arm f are applied by the direct pressure exerted by the driver. At the same time the sleeves e<1>, f<1> are displaced laterally relatively to each other, thereby forcing the clutch discs d<3>, d<4> into engagement with driving disc c<12> so that the brakes connected to the clutch are also applied.
