Abstract

234,900. Fedden, A. H. R., Butler, L. F. G., and Bristol Aeroplane Co., Ltd. March 4, 1924. Valve gear.-Two or more exhaust valves 11, 12 arranged radially in the cylinder head and actuated from a single push rod 19 at the side of the engine, through levers 22 pivoted at 23 and engaging at their other ends with rockers 27 pivoted at 28 so as to swing in planes containing the axes of the valves. Similarly, two or more radial inlet valves 13, 14 are actuated from another push rod 32 through a bell-crank 30 pivoted at 31 and connected by push rods 34 to bellcranks 35 swinging in planes containing the valve axes and approximately the rods 34 also. The rods 34 are provided with joints 37 at each end. The rockers 27 are convexly curved at their undersides which engage the valve stems, and are shaped at their upper sides normal to the direction of movement of the ends of the levers 22; the rockers may be replaced by leaf springs. For compensating for heat expansion, the pivots 23 and 31 are carried by a lever 15 which is pivoted at 16 to the cylinder head and connected at its other end by a rod 18 to the crank case.
