Cutting slices in succession.-In a machine of the type in which a meat carriage reciprocates towards and from a rotating disc knife and a common driving means is provided for the knife and carriage, the knife is driven by two-step gearing in such a manner as to present different portions of the knife periphery to the meat at successive reciprocations of the table. Means are provided for adjusting the tension of the knife-driving chain. A hand wheel turns a bevel pinion meshing with a bevel wheel 15 on a shaft to which is secured the usual crank 17 for reciprocating the meat carriage. The bevel wheel 15 drives the rotating knife 47 by a bevel pinion 40 and chain wheels 43, 46. The numbers of teeth on these chain wheels may be 28 and 11 respectively. For chain adjustment, the pedestal 34, supporting the knife shaft and its sprocket wheel, is vertically adjustable by screwed studs 37 engaging studs 35 screwed into the base of the machine and also engaging slots in the pedestal. Further guiding slots 38 in the pedestal engage fixed lugs 39. The top of the pedestal is split and clamped by a screw 50, so that the ballbearing-housing carrying the knife shaft can be moved longitudinally to adjust the position of the knife.
