Abstract
A solid state switching circuit, typically for use in dimmer control of an electric lamp (11). The switching circuit comprises a primary solid state switching device (10) in the form of a triac which is arranged to be connected in circuit with the lamp (11) across a supply voltage (12), and a gating circuit (13) arranged to apply a gating signal to the primary switching device (10) at a predetermined time during each half-cycle of the supply voltage. A secondary state switching device (14) in the form of a transistor is connected in a rectifier circuit (15) and located in parallel with the primary switching device (10), and a biasing circuit (16) is provided to apply a biasing signal to the secondary switching device (14) in intervals during which the primary switching device is non-conducting.
