Abstract

A wire is retained against a fence post by opposed clips 5 which hook into the recess in the post; the tension of the wire 4 serves to hold the clips in place: alternatively brackets 8 slide over a fence post in cooperation with the recess (at 14), the weight of a hanging basket attached to arm 9 exerting a downward force 12, and generating opposed forces 13, 15 which lock the bracket against the fence post. In another embodiment, (Fig 3, not shown) fixing screws act additionally between the bracket and the face of the post.

concrete fence post.

This invention relates to retainers (Brackets, clips which may be in pairs or singular) for securing garden furniture, espalier wires and accessories on a concrete fence post on a permanent or non-permanent basis.

Retaining and securing garden furniture such as pots, hanging baskets and espalier wires etc., on a concrete fence post is normally achieved by drilling a hole or holes in the concrete fence post and securing the for mentioned garden furniture directly onto the post by means of screws, bolts into a raw plug or alike. This may create difficulties in that this type of post is mainly manufactured from a concrete and ballast mix, and some incorporate iron rod reinforcements which may cause problems with drilling, and weakening of the post may occur. If a secure mounting is achieved to which the for mentioned garden furniture is secured to, the position of this mounting is permanent and so if any adjustment of this position is required a repeat operation of the drilling procedure would be required thus further weakening of the post may occur plus personal inconvenience.

An object of this invention is to provide simple and convenient retainers for a variety of garden furniture which includes pots, hanging baskets and espalier wires to a concrete garden fixed post without any need for drilling (thus no weakening of post) and for the position of the garden flimiture on the concrete post to be easily adjusted.

Accordingly this invention provides (pairs or singular) retainers for securing garden furniture to a concrete fence post. One end of these retainers takes the form of a hook which locates in a recess (which is a characteristic on the sides of concrete fence posts) and lock in. The other end or centre of the retainers is attached to the garden furniture it is retaining. The weight of the garden furniture being retained is utilised in this invention, in that the weight of the garden furniture applied to the retainers causes the retainers to lock on to the concrete fence posts, the more the weight of the garden furniture the tighter the grip the retainers have on the concrete fence post. Relieving the weight of the garden furniture will enable the retainers to be moved up or down the concrete fence post to enable any adjustment of position required, when this achieved the weight of the garden furniture is re-applied to lock the retainers in the new position.

Preferably these retainers are made of metal or plastics material, but they may instead be made from wood to match garden fencing, or a combination of these materials. These retainers may also be coloured in a variety of colours by means of paint or coating by plastics and may be made from a skeleton or solid construction.

2 A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to accompanying drawing in which:- Figure 1 Shows a pair of clips mounted on a concrete fence post, also shown in figure 1 is an item of garden furniture as an example only this is an espalier wire but could be a number of other items.

Figure 2 Shows for example only a pair of brackets but instead a single larger bracket may be used. Mounted on a concrete fence post, also shown in figure 2 is an item of garden furniture as an example only, this is an angle bracket for holding a hanging basket, but could be a number of other items.

Figure 3 Shows a bracket mounted on a concrete fence post, in which a item of garden furniture such as a trellis fence or garden canopy for example only, slides into and is secured.

Referring to the drawings figure 1 shows a section of concrete fence post 1 either side of which are two section of fence panels 2. Attached to the fence post 1 are a pair of clips 3 also shown is a piece of garden furniture which may be retained, as an example only in figure I this is an espalier wire 4. The espalier wire 4 is wrapped around hooks 5 of clips 3 and as the espalier wire 4 is pull tight, this causes clips 3 to be pulled together as indicated by arrows 6, and makes the hooks 7 of clips 3 lock into posts 1. In figure 2 the garden furniture being retain for example only is an angle bracket 9 for holding hanging baskets. The angle bracket 9 is attached to brackets 8 by for example, nut and bolts, rivets or similar means. Figure 2 shows nuts 10 and bolts 11 for example only. The brackets 8 slide onto the croncrete fence post 1 when the desired position for the angle bracket 9 is achieved, weight is applied to the angle bracket 9 by means of the hanging basket it will hold. The weight of the hanging pulls down on the angle bracket 9 as indicated by arrow 12, this in-turn pulls on the top bracket 8 as indicated by arrow 13, causing hooks 14 of the top bracket 8 to lock onto the concrete fence post 1. At the same time pushes the front part of the lower bracket 8 into the concrete fence post 1 causing it to lock as indicated by arrow 15. Figure 3 shows a bracket 16 which slides onto concrete fence post 1, bracket 16 locks on to post 1 by for example only bolts 17 or alike. This bracket 16 will retain garden furniture such as for example only trellis fencing, a garden canopy, a garden arch, by means of a post 18 attached to the for mentioned aarden furniture. This post 18 would slide into bracket 16 as indicated by arrow 19 and be locked in for example only by bolt 20 or alike.

The retainer(s) as claimed in claim 1 are designed to fit into the recess of a fence post.

The retainer(s) as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 become a secure retainer when one or two are attached to a garden basket or other like item, for the purpose of holding garden accessories.
