Abstract
A clip for supporting a hanging basket or the like comprises a length of wire (1) which is bent at its ends to form two loops (2) and is adapted to be fitted to a slotted fence post (5) in a removable manner and to be positioned on the fence post in such a manner that a hanging basket or the like can be suspended from the clip when the clip has been fitted to the fence post. The wire may be provided in a central region with a loop-like protuberance (4) for receiving and locating a hook from which a container such as a hanging basket can be suspended.
Description
Trde. TMPROVEMENTS IN CLTPS
This invention relates to clips for supporting hanging baskets and the like.
Slotted fence posts are frequently used to support sections of fencing in gardens and the like. Such fence posts are usually made of reinforced concrete. The advantage of these are that they do not rot and have an indefinite life. Ifa section of fencing extending between such fence posts needs replacing, for example as a result of deterioration through age or damage such as storm damage, the old fence section can easily be removed and a new fence section readily slotted in place.
However, concrete fence posts have a rather stark appearance. This can be softened if a plant container such as a hanging baslcet can be hung from the post.
However, being made of concrete, it is not easy to attach suspension means for the container to the fence post. The present invention seeks to solve this problem.
According to the invention, there is provided a clip for supporting a hanging basket or the like, which clip comprises a length of wire which is adapted to be fitted to a slotted fence post in a removable manner and which is further adapted to be positioned on a fence post in such a manner that a hanging basket or the like can be suspended from the clip when the clip has been fitted to a fence post.
Preferably, a major portion of the clip is designed to be substantially horizontal when the clip is fitted to a slotted fence post. The ends of the clip may extend substantially perpendicular to the said major portion of the clip whereby said ends are substantially vertical when the clip is fitted to a slotted fence post in order to provide support for the remainder of the clip.
A central region of the clip is desirably provided with a looplike protuberance for receiving and locating a hook from which a container such as a hanging basket can be suspended.
The clip is desirably made of wire having a desired degree of resilience such as piano wire. Preferably, the wire is coated with a suitable plastics material.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of a clip according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the clip fitted to a slotted fence post; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the clip fitted to the post shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the clip according to the invention comprises a length of wire 1 which is desirably of 2mm diameter and consists of 18 gauge wire such as piano wire. The wire is bent to form two loops 2 which are adapted to fit on a slotted fence post 5 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The wire tenninates at each end in a straight section 3 which is substantially vertical when the device is fitted to a slotted fence post 5 and bears against the side of the fence post. the resilience of the wire and the end sections 3 serve to secure the clip on the fence post in a firm and positive manner.
The clip is further provided, in its central region, with a deformed looplike protuberance 4 which serves to locate a hook from which a hook for a container such as a hanging basket can be suspended.
It has been found that a clip according to the invention can be clipped on a fence post at any height and serves to support a hanging basket in a positive manner and does not slide down the post.
The invention is not restricted to the above-described embodiment but variations and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
For example, although it is preferred to equip the clip with a plastics coating, this is not essential since the clip is equally effective if it is not coated.
Claims (5)
1. A clip for supporting a hanging basket or the like, said clip comprising a length of wire which is adapted to be fitted to a slotted fence post in a removable manner and which is further adapted to be positioned on a fence post in such a manner that a hanging basket or the like can be suspended from the clip when the clip has been fitted to a fence post.
2. A clip according to claim 1, whereon a major portion of the clip is designed to be substantially horizontal when the clip is fitted to a slotted fence post.
3. A clip according to claim 2, wherein the ends of the clip extend substantially perpendicular to the said major portion of the clip.
4. A clip according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the clip has a central region which is provided with a looplike protuberance.
5. A clip substantially as described herein with reference to the drawings.
5. A clip according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the clip is made of wire having a degree of resilience, such as piano wire.
6. A clip according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the wire is coated with a plastics material.
7. A clip substantially as described herein with reference to the drawings.
