Abstract
232,544. Pieper, A. F. April 18, 1924, [Convention date]. Multiple-way valves; actuating-mechanism.-A multi-way valve device employs a single valve spindle having longitudinal movement for actuating one of the valve and rotary movement for actuating the other. The device is shown applied to a dental spittoon such as that described in Specification 222,114. The valve comprises a casting having an inlet 25, Fig. 3, communicating through a passage 27 with a chamber 28 from which water is distributed to the spittoon for flushing and other purposes. The passage 27 is controlled by a valve 29 integral with the spindle 62. The chamber 28 also contains a sliding valve member 33, the two ends of which control a port leading to a passage 37 and thence to the flushing nozzle, and a part leading to a passage 40 and thence to a saliva-ejecting device, respectively. The valve 33 is operated by a rotary movement of the spindle 62, a projection 64 engaging in a groove 34 in the, valve. The valve 30 is operated by an independent longitudinal movement of the spindle. The spindle passes through a stuffing-box 68 having a shoulder 69 bearing on a shoulder 70 in the casing. The stuffing-box is held in position by a screwed sleeve 71, which supports a tubular part 72 which can be rotated independently of the sleeve and the spindle. The part 72 has a lug 74 engaging a corresponding lug 75 on a sleeve 76 which compresses the packing 78. The packing may thus be compressed by the rotary movement, only of the part 72. The outer end of the part 72 is. internally threaded to reeceive an actuating-member 82 mounted on the spindle between a shoulder 80 and head 81. Rotation of the member 82 effects a simple longitudinal movement of the spindle to actuate the valve 30. Rotation of the spindle is effected independently by means of a wing 83.
