Abstract

An access barrier has two vertically inclined sections 1 and 2, joined at the top and with a further section 3, joining the two at a height to impede motorcycle handlebars. The barrier is inclined towards a similar structure such that there is created a narrower access distance at the top than at ground level, Figure 1. Optionally there may be one barrier inclined towards a wall that has members mounted thereon to provide the requisite narrowing at the top of the barrier. The barriers allow the passage of pedestrians with push chairs and cycles but restricts cars and motor cycles.

Description

Restricted Access Banter This invention relates to a barrier which allows pedestrian access whilst preventing motorised vehicle access.
Restrictive access barriers are used on footpaths, bridleways, towpaths and other such public rights of way as well as on private land to prevent unauthorised forms of entry.
According to the present invention there is provided a barrier arrangement which allows pedestrian, wheel chair and pedal cycle access but which restricts motorised vehicle entry including motor cycles.
A specific embodiment of the invention win now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure I shows two such barriers in perspective.
Referring to the drawing the barrier comprises two vertically inclined sections 1 and 2 formed from a single section or as a fabrication, joined at the top such that sections 1 and 2 are separated by a nominal distance of at least 150mm. The lower ends of 1 and 2 can be used to anchor the structure into the ground.
The whole, or the upper portions from some intermediate point in the vertical direction, is inclined from the vertical plane towards a second vertical plane parallel to a line joining the base of the two vertical sections such that the joined section is closer to this second plane than the base of sections 1 and 2. A firther section, 3, is attached to 1 and 2 at a suitable height which, after installation, is at a height necessary to impede motor cycle handlebars. Other sections or panels maybe added to enhance stability.
Such a construction can be used inconjunction with a similar construction, such that the inclined portions are inclined towards each other and the plane containing the sections 1 and 2 is in the direction of the path. The distance apart of the two constructions is such that at ground level the gap formed allows the passage of wheel chairs, the inclined portion and the cross member 3 inhibits the passage of motorcycle handlebars whilst the smallest gap formed by the nearest approach ofthe inclined portions is sufficient to allow personnel through. The two constructions maybe secured together by suitable sections.
Alternatively such a construction can be used singularly such that the inclined portion would be towards an existing structure. It this case a suitable abutment would need to be attached to the existing structure to simulate the upper inclined portion of the construction and permit the sections 1 and 2 to be sufficiently distanced from the existing structure to allow passage of wheelchairs whilst at the same time forming the upper restriction that prohibits the passage of motorcycles. .
A singular or plurality of lateral sections, horizontally or vertically inclined, free standing or attached to one or either side ofthe above construction prevents the access point being circumnavigated.

Claims (4)

1. An access barrier which allows the free passage of pedestrian, wheelchair and pedal cycle traffic whilst restricting motorised vehicular access.
2. An access barrier the whole or part of which inclines towards a similar barrier to form an access point which is wider at ground level than at any other point.
3. An access barrier which provides a means to impedes motor cycle handlebars being manipulated through the access point.
4. An access barrier substantially as described herein with reference to Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing.
4. An access barrier as in claim 1 and claim 2 where a single member inclines inward to provide a narrower access at the top than at the bottom.
5. An access barrier substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 of the accompanying drawing.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1 A barrier that allows the passage of pedestrians, wheel-chairs and pedal cycles whilst restricting access for motorised vehicles and motorcycles comprising two rigid, inverted, U-shaped bows vertically inclined in opposition to each other such that the gap between the two U-shapes at their apex is smaller than the gap at the bottom; each U shape has a section connecting the arms of the U at a height such that after installation it is at a height to impede motorcycle handlebars, strengthening webs may be located at the base of the U along one side, the two U-shapes can be interconnected at their base so that they are united in one piece, the base of the U-shapes are embedded below ground to a depth such that the lower strengthening members are also below ground leaving the two vertically inclined, inverted U-members opposing each other with no obstacle at ground level thus allowing smooth passageway for pedestrians, wheel-chairs and pedal-cycles, whilst restricting the passage of motorcycles and other motorised vehicles.
2.A barrier as in claim 1. with additional sections across the Ushapes at a height and sufficiently protruding towards its opposing U-shape such that the upper gap between the two U-shapes is further reduced offering greater impedance to motorcycles.
3. A barrier where only one U-shape is used, vertically inclined towards a rigid structure, such as a wall, thereby creating a narrower opening at the top than at the base.
