Abstract

A free fall simulator has a raised platform 8 from which a person can experience a controlled jump or ride onto a safety surface 11. The rider fits into a body harness (7(a)) or hand grip 7(b) which is linked by a chain or cable 2 through an overhead gantry 12 to a mechanical governor 1. On removing the harness it will return to its start position by gravity or mechanical means. The rate of descent of the rider may be adjustable, and a multiple stage pulley system (fig. 3) may be used. An emergency (centrifugal) brake may be provided.

Description

FREE FALL DESCENT SIMULATOR.
This invention relates to a free fall descent simulator.
Descending rides in leisure use are well known as an enjoyable and adventurous pursuit. They take the form of slides, poles, ropes and ladders. In these situations the rider sits on or stays in contact with the equipment and controls the speed of descent, if necessary, by applying friction to part of the equipment.
The free fall simulator departs from other rides by suspending the rider in mid air out of direct contact with the equipment and subject to the governed rate of descent.
These factors will increase the adventurous element and introduce new landing skills.
According to the present invention there is provided a free fall descent simulator comprising a platform fixed at an appropriate height, with a ladder or other access fitted, and a riders' body harness or hand grips linked to a running chain or cable through an overhead gantry housing pulley wheels which direct the chain/cable to an expanding mechanical governor which controls the speed.
The gantry overhangs the platform so that a rider will be clear of any supporting framework during the ride and at landing on a safety mat at ground level.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a side view, the simulator with the chain/cable extended and the overhanging gantry, the launch platform, an access ladder and a location of the mechanical governor.
Figure 2 shows an enlarged section, the location of the governor.
Figure 3 shows a side view, an alternative example using a different structure to create the platform and a different format of the pulley system and governor.
The cable is retracted.
Referring to the drawing the simulator comprises a fixed expanding governor 1 with an adjustable speed control 10 linked through a swivel 5 to a running chain or cable 2 through a guide and sound proofing 3 to appropriate pulley wheels 4 in an overhead gantry 12 to direct the cable in the required direction. At the end of the chain is a riders body harness 7(a) or hand grips 7(b) which are linked to the chain through a swivel. 5 The ride commences after the rider has secured himself into the harness or hand grips and positioned himself at the edge of the platform 8 in line with the gantry.
He aims at a landing spot on the safety mat 11 below and steps off the platform.
He is supported by the harness and chain in descent but at a speed controlled by the governor.
During the descent he will control his body position to prepare for the landing which is cushioned by a large safety mat. A centrifugal brake is fitted to one of the pulley wheels to provide an emergency brake. 6 When the rider releases the harness it returns to its starting position by gravitational force or mechanical assistance. The rider can return to the platform 8 by means of the access ladder 9.
The simulator can be adapted for situations where height is restricted by increasing the mechanical advantage of the pulley system.

Claims (8)

1. A free fall simulator comprising a platform fixed at an appropriate height, with a ladder or other access fitted, and a riders harness or hand grips linked to a running chain or cable through an overhead gantry housing pulley wheels which direct the chain/cable to an expanding mechanical governor which controls the speed. The gantry overhangs the platform so that the rider will be clear of any supporting framework during the ride and at landing on a safety mat at ground level.
2. A free fall simulator as claimed in claim 1 wherein control means are fitted to adjust the speed of descent at the governor.
3. A free fall simulator as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the cable or chain is directed through a multiple stage pulley system with appropriate sprockets, wheels or pocket wheels.
4. A free fall simulator as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3 wherein the cable/chain is directed through guides and sound proofing material.
5. A free fall simulator as claimed in claim 4 wherein the harness will return to its start position by gravity or mechanical means.
6. A free fall simulator as claimed in 5 wherein safety padding is fitted at vulnerable points of the frame and at the ground.
7. A free fall simulator as claimed in 6 wherein one of the pulley wheels is fitted with an emergency brake.
8. A free fall simulator as claimed in 7 wherein the chain or cable is linked at each end to a swivel which links to the harness and the governor.
