Producers.-In the manufacture of water gas, the blast is introduced at an intermediate part of the fuel column and the products are withdrawn from the top and bottom simultaneously. When two producers are used, the products from the first one enter at the top and bottom of the second one and are withdrawn at an intermediate outlet. During the blow, air passes downwards through a superheater a, up a carburettor b, and thence to a producer c wherein it flows upwards and downwards to valves 3 and 4 respectively. After traversing a second producer c', the gases flow to the top of a carburettor b<1> wherein they are burnt by admitting secondary air through a valve 6; if bituminous fuel be used, secondary air may also be admitted at a valve 5 between the producers. The combustion products pass through a superheater a<1> and escape at the stack valve 1. During the run, steam is admitted at a valve 8 and passes through the apparatus in the same direction as the air in the preceding blow; and air may be supplied at a valve 9 to carburet the gas. During the succeeding blow and run, the flow is in the opposite direction.
