Abstract

231,798. Western Electric Co., Ltd., (Western Electric Co., Inc.). Nov. 30, 1923. Magnetic instruments; diaphragms.-For use as a loudspeaker without additional sound amplifying devices, a conical diaphragm 9, Fig. 1, is provided, having a diameter greater than its height and being supported solely at its apex so that its edge is unconstrained and perfectly free to vibrate. The diaphragm is made of light elastic material such as paper or linen impregnated with phenol condensation products. Aluminium may also be used. It is supported at its apex by a rod 8 which serves to transmit the vibrations of an actuating device 7, the rod being connected to the armature 15 of the device 7 by a lever 19 and rod 16. The rod is connected to the lever 19 at such a point that the " mechanical impedances " of the diaphragm and the actuating device are matched. The diaphragm may be stiffened by turning back its edge 10 parallel to its axis. The edge may be stiffened by a ring of rattan. The diaphragm may be used with phonographs.
