Abstract

231,619. Varley, C. H., and Williams, A. L. Feb. 5, 1924. Average speed, measuring directly.-In a device for indicating average speed comprising logarithmic cams and differential gearing connected to the pointer the cam wheels 6, 7 driven from a clock and a distance wheel of a speedometer respectively are arranged to rock toothed sectors 10, 15 pivoted on an axis 11 by pins 9, 14 engaging logarithmic cam grooves. The sectors, which rock in opposite directions, mesh with sun wheels 12, 16 mounted loosely on a spindle 4 and forming part of an epicyclic train the planet pinions 17, 19 of which are carried by a frame 18 secured to the spindle 4. Movement of the spindle is communicated by a gear-train 5 to an indicating pointer 3 movin; over a suitably calibrated dial 2. Restraining springs and zeroizing means may be provided, together with means for putting the device out of action.
