Abstract
A removable side window 11 is simply and easily removable from its fixings 12, 13 by rotating the window 11 beyond a normal open position and then vertically displacing the window 11 in an upwardly direction. This is achieved by a pivot comprising a headed arm 22 received in an L-shaped not 20 in a bush 14.
Description
A Motor Vehicle
This invention relates to motor vehicles and in particular to an opening rear quarter light for a motor vehicle.
It is well known to provide an opening rear quarter light for a motor vehicle that is pivotable from a closed position to an open position. Such opening rear quarter lights are used to increase the flow of air through a cabin of the motor vehicle.
According to this invention there is provided a removable window for a motor vehicle the window being connected to part of the body structure of the vehicle by one or more pivot means so as to allow the window to pivot through a normal range of motion from a closed position to an open position wherein the window is movable to a position beyond said normal range of motion in which it can be disconnected from the vehicle by vertically displacing the window in an upwardly direction.
The pivot means may comprise of a cylindrical bush having an L-shaped slot therein and a headed pivot arm for engagement with the slot in the bush.
The slot may extend circumferentially around said bush for a distance that is greater than the distance needed to accommodate movement of the pivot arm throughout the normal range of motion of the window from said open to said closed position.
The cylindrical bush may be connected to the vehicle body and the pivot arm may be connected to the window.
The head on the headed pivot arm may be part spherical.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings of which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a motor vehicle having a removable window according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged pictorial representation of a cylindrical bush assembly forming part of a pivot means according to the invention; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged pictorial representation of a pivot arm forming part of the pivot means according to the invention.
With reference to Figs. 1 to 3 there is shown a motor vehicle 10 having a removable side window 11 pivotal connected to a C' post 6 forming part of the body structure of the vehicle by pivot means 12, 13.
The pivot means 12, 13 comprise of a cylindrical bush 14 and a headed pivot arm 25.
The cylindrical bush 14 has an L-shaped slot 20 formed therein having a vertical section 18 and a horizontal section 19. The vertical section 18 of the slot 20 is open-ended at its upper end so as to allow for the engagement of the headed pivot arm 25 therein.
A plate 15 is attached to the cylindrical bush 14 by welding to provide a means for attaching the cylindrical bush 14 to the C' post 6. The plate 15 has two apertures 16 (only one shown) into which rivets (not shown) can be inserted to secure the plate 15 to the C' post 6.
The headed pivot arm 25 has an L-shaped arm 22 to the free end of which is connected a substantially spherical head 21. The arm 22 is connected at the other end to a plate 23 used to secure the arm 22 to the window 11.
The plate 23 has two spaced apart apertures 24 formed therein through which glass securing means (not shown) can be inserted.
During normal opening of the window 11 the arm 22 is movable through a normal range of motion from a closed position C' to an open position '0' (as shown on Fig. 2) the head 21 remaining engaged with the bore 17. During such normal movement the window 11 cannot be disconnected from the vehicle as the arm 22 is engaged with the horizontal section 19 of the L-shaped slot 20.
If it is required to remove the window 11 from the vehicle 10 the window 11 is moved beyond its normal open position '0' to a position where the arm 22 can travel up the vertical portion 18 of the L-shaped slot 20. In this position it is possible to remove the window from the motor vehicle 10 by vertically displacing the window 11 in an upwardly direction. Such upward movement of the window will allow the arm 22 to become disengaged from the Lshaped slot 20 thereby allowing the window 11 to be removed.
It will be appreciated that although the invention has been described with reference to one cylindrical bush 14 and one pivot arm 22 in practice two or more pivot means 12, 13 would be required to adequately support the window 11.
Claims (6)
1. A removable window for a motor vehicle the window
being connected to part of the body structure of the
vehicle by one or more pivot means so as to allow the
window to pivot through a normal range of motion from
a closed position to an open position wherein the
window is movable to a position beyond said normal
range of motion in which it can be disconnected from
the vehicle by vertically displacing the window in a
upwardly direction.
2. A removable window as claimed in Claim 1 in which the
pivot means comprises of a cylindrical bush having an
L-shaped slot therein and a headed pivot arm for
engagement with the L-shaped slot in the bush.
3. A removable window as claimed in Claim 2 in which the
L-shaped slot extends circumferentially around said
bush for a distance that is greater than the distance
needed to accommodate movement of the pivot arm during
the normal range of motion of the window from said
open to said closed position.
4 A removable window as claimed in Claims 2 or 3 in
which the cylindrical bush is connected to part of the
body structure of the vehicle and the headed pivot arm
is connected to the window.
5. A removable window as claimed in Claim 4 in which the
head of the headed pivot arm is part spherical.
6. A removable window for a motor vehicle substantially
as described herein with reference to the accompanying
drawings.
