Abstract

231,055. Downie, R. R., and Keystone Driller Co. July 7, 1924. Scoop-arm machines. - In an excavating- machine the scoop 23 is rigidly secured to the bottom of a post 11 pivoted about the end of a swingable boom 2 and is provided with a pivoted bottom 25 having earth-entering teeth 26, 27 and releasable latching means 29, 33. The boom and post are controlled through a hoisting line 18 which engages a sheave 17 carried by bent bars 16 pivoted about the top of the post 11, and the scoop 23 is propelled by a hauling cable 43 secured to the scoop or to the bottom of the post 11. The latching means for the scoop bottom comprises a pivoted finger 33 which is normally held by a spring 35 in engagement with a tongue 29 on the bottom 25 and which has secured to it a dumping line 39 by which it may be withdrawn so as to allow the bottom 25 to drop. The post 11 preferably comprises two channel bars spaced apart by plates secured to their flanges, and bars 5 are secured to the end of the boom 2 to cooperate with brackets 7 on the post 11 to form long bearings for the pivot pin 6 about which the post swings.
