To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L-Lnsnin Piinnnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city oi, Chicago, county of Cook anc State of Illinois, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Excavators. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in excavators, and has for its object the pro vision of an improved construction of this character which is simple and efiicient in use. I
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferred form of construction aspivoted at 9 on carriage 6 and links 10 and 11 are pivoted, as shown, to the corners oi members 8 on opposite sides of the pivots 5). sin excavating bucket 12 is pivoted. as shown. to the lower ends of the links 10 and 11 and is balanced to carry its load. 1.. draw cable 13 is connected to cause the carriage 6 and the bucket 12 to traverse the areato be excavated. The cable 13 is provided with. two branches 1a and 15. The branch 14 consists of two diverging cable strands leading and attached to eyes 1&' and on the forward edges of the" excavating bucket as shown. The branch 15 consists of two diverging strands passing around the grooved guide pulleys 16 on carriage (i and connected with eyes 17 on the rocker members 8 as shown, the branches 15 passing under and beyond the pivotal axis 9. Stops 18 and 19 are arranged on carriage 6 to limit the rocking movements of the members 8 .in either direction. The excavating bucket 12 is provided with a swinging tail gate 20 pivoted thereto and carrying a spring held latch bolt 21 adapted to engage a latch bar 22 as indicated. A tripping cable 23 is attached to the latch bolt 21 and also to an eye '24 on the under side of carriage 6, the arrangement being such that when the excavating bucket 12 dumps as indicated in dotted linesin Fig. 1, the tail gate 21 will be automatically released and swing into open position to discharge the contents of the bucket.
In operation, the cables 5 and 13 are manipulated in the usual way to permit the carriage and bucket to slide down cable 5 under the influence of gravity over the area to be excavated, whereupon cable 5 is slaclc ened and cable 13 is operated as a draw cable to draw the excavating bucket back over the area to be excavated, filling the same with material in the usual way, said material being lifted by tightening cable 5 and also by the upward inclination thereof and carried in the bucket 12 until the stop 7 is encountered, said stop being positioned at the point where it is desired to dump the excavating material. When the stop 7 is encountered by the carriage 6, further travel of said carriage is prevented, whereupon the bucket 12 will be caused to swing forwardly by the tension on cable 13. This will throw the tension on to the cable strands 15 and thence on to the eyes 17 onthe rocker members 8. The cable strands 15 passing under and beyond the pivoted points 9 will cause the rocker members 8- to rock rearwardly into the dotted line positionas indicated in F 1g. 1. When tension on cable 13 is relieved, the bucket 12 assumes its normal position by the actionof gravity and because it is balanced to do so, such assumption being in any event forced by contact of the bucket with the ground as the car prec.

The added slack in cable strands let permits more free dumping of the bucket and thus a complete upending thereof to lacilitate discharge. lln either arrangement, a simple and ellective excavating mechanism is provided which will carry its load to the desired point and then effectively dump and discharge the same.

Having described my invention, what I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An excavator comprising a supoor n L V 6 cable; a carriage travelling thereon; a stop for said carriage; an excavating bucket swingingly suspended on said carriage;

An excavator comprising a supporting cable; a carriage travelling thereon; a stop for said carriage; a rocker member pivotally mounted on said carriage; supporting links pivoted to said rocker member; an excavating bucket pivotally carried by said linlzs, said bucket being arranc'ml to be dumped rearwardly by rocking oi .iid member; a draw cable operatively connected with said bucket and with said rocker member; a tail ate for said bucket; and means tor autoniatically opening said tail gate upon dumping of said bucket, substantially as described.
