Description

PROGRAMMABLE PERSONAL COMPUTER INTERFACE The invention described herein relates to a programmable personal computer interface.
The personal computer expansion bus interface offers unlimited scope for adapter or expansion card designs, that cover many applications for scientific, commercial and personal use, such as video frame grabbers, data acquisition, printer interfaces, sound, multi-media and input/output control.
Whatever the application may be, the designer is presented with the same problems of interfacing a particular design to the personal computer bus signals available at an expansion bus socket and, without prior experience, common faults on adapter designs such as short circuits or incorrect buffering of personal computer bus signals, may lead to permanent damage of a personal computer and/or an adapter. Furthermore, an electrically fault free and well buffered adapter design does not guarantee correct operation with respect to functionality and/or personal computer bus signal timings.
The present invention seeks to provide a reliable and versatile, programmable and reconfigurable personal computer interface, employable as a prototype platform for the rapid prototyping of adapter designs, using a single device to implement the personal computer interface, to which a particular application can be interfaced.
According to the present invention, there is provided a programmable personal computer interface, comprising a single electronic system, containing means to interface personal computer bus signals available at a personal computer expansion bus socket, to application specific designs, by any application specific integrated circuit, programmable logic device, programmable logic controller, memory or other similar integrated circuit with respect to functionality, complexity, design or any combination thereof, operating as the controller for the programmable personal computer interface.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which : Figure 1 Illustrates the invention in block diagram form.
Referring to the drawing, the programmable personal computer interface is provided in the form of a single electronic system, as shown in drawing 1 / 1, Figure 1.
The controller 1 is connected directly to personal computer bus signals by means of a personal computer expansion bus edge connector 2. The controller provides all the signal buffering between any application specific design 3 and the personal computer bus signals and, enables valid communication between a personal computer and an application specific design, by correctly decoding personal computer bus cycles according to a unique address set on the dual-in-line package switch 4.
All signals communicated between the controller and application specific design are also available for external interfacing by connector means 5: this affords the designer appropriate means for prototype development, after which completed designs, hereinbefore referred to as the application specific design 3, can be implemented adjacent the programmable personal computer interface.
The personal computer expansion bus edge connector 2 provides means to facilitate the programming of the controller and effect functions provided thereof. To initially configure and/or re-configure the controller, socket means 6 are provided for manual extraction and/or insertion following external configuration. Alternatively, configuration connector means 7 enable in-circuit configuration and/or reconfiguration of the controller.

Claims (6)

  1. A programmable personal computer interface, comprising a single electronic system, containing means to interface personal computer bus signals available at a personal computer expansion bus socket, to application specific designs, by any application specific integrated circuit, programmable logic device, programmable logic controller, memory or other similar integrated circuit with respect to functionality, complexity, design or any combination thereof, operating as the controller for the programmable personal computer interface.
  2. 2 A programmable personal computer interface as claimed in Claim 1, wherein socket means are provided for the insertion and/or removal of the controller, such that a minimum or zero force is applied to the controller leads or pins thereof, for the purpose of external configuration and/or re-configuration of the controller.
  3. 3 A programmable personal computer interface as claimed in Claim 2, wherein switch means are provided to set an address to uniquely identify the invention when connected into a personal computer expansion bus socket, for the purpose of enabling valid communication between a personal computer and the invention.
  4. 4 A programmable personal computer interface as Claimed in any preceding claim, wherein connector means are provided to enable physical connection by cable means with an external application specific design for the purpose of interfacing to the invention.
  5. 5 A programmable personal computer interface as Claimed in Claim 4, wherein connector means are provided to enable physical connection by cable means to a system remote from the invention thereof, for the purpose of down-loading initial configuration or re-configuration data to the invention, such that the invention may perform initial and/or new and/or amended functions.
  6. 6 A programmable personal computer interface substantially as described herein, with reference to Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing.
