Abstract

230,306. Nagel, T. May 5, 1924. Briquetting processes.-A process for briquetting finely-divided ores consists in mixing with the ore an organic adhesive, consisting of 0.5-5 per cent, preferably 1.5 per cent of pure or crude orthophosphoric acid and 3-15 per cent, preferably 7.5 per cent of blackstrap molasses, briquetting the mixture by pressure, and heating the briquettes to a temperature between 400‹ F. and 1000‹ F. so as to convert the adhesive into a water-insoluble and non-fusible tenacious binder and to form briquettes which whilst burning do not soften nor emit smoke and odours. The phosphoric acid may be replaced by an acid phosphate such as that of calcium, and the blackstrap molasses by a saccharine or carbohydrate material such as concentrated slops, the residue after making alcohol from molasses, concentrated beet-sugar residue, concentrated sulphite liquor from the wood pulp industry, or starch paste.
