Abstract

Universal joints.-In a universal joint, radial slots F are sawn or pressed in cup-shaped parts A, B formed spherically both externally and internally and made integrally with, keyed, or splined to the shafts. Curved flexible metal or other segments D are arranged parallel to the normal shaft axes to engage the slots and bear on a central ball C against which the cups abut. The cup centres may be bored out and plugged by blocks G bearing on the ball. Two or more laterally dished segments, which may be separated by leather packing-pieces, may be arranged in each opposing pair of slots. The blocks G may be tubular and one block may be integral with the ball C. Escape of lubricant is prevented by the use of a cover E secured to one cup and bearing on the other and by packing e<4>.
