Abstract

201,873. Clark, H. C., and Huddart, A. H. Aug. 19, 1919. Universal joints.-In order to provide increased areas of contact in universal joints of the type in which hardened steel balls carried by a sphericallyended shaft engage longitudinal grooves in a hollow cylindrical member on the other shaft, the balls b seat in depressions in cylindrical phosphor bronze or other slippers c. Axial holes are drilled in the member d on a pitch circle equal in diameter to the spherical end of the shaft a, and the central part is bored out to that diameter; the portions of the slippers c which project into the inner space are also bored away. If no axial freedom between the shafts is desired, parts e having spherical seats to fit the end of the shaft a are carried by the member d. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 149,504.
