Description

2287646 A Vehicle Seat with a Child's SgfM Se The invention concerns a
vehicle seat with a child's safety seat.
From DE-A-3936166 vehicle seats are known, in which a child's safety seat is integrated into the backrest. However, the integration of a child's safety seat into the backrest of a vehicle seat requires a not insignificant design input, which affects the manufacturing costs of the vehicle seat. The above mentioned DE-A-3936166 does not give any indications regarding the safety belt belonging to the integrated child's safety seat; to ensure that the safety belt of the child's safety seat is not too obtrusive in the inactive position of the child's safety seat, that is to say when an adult takes his or her seat in this place, it is possible to store the safety belt belonging to the child's safety seat between the two foldable upholstery parts of the integrated child's safety seat.
Another variant known per se, has the child's safety seat fixed, in case of need, on a vehicle seat by means of the safety belts of the vehicle. The child's safety seat is then usually fitted with a full harness type of safety belt. However, such an independent child's safety seat requires a considerable amount of space which is a nuisance, in parti- cular when then the child's safety seat is not required at the time, for example in taxis, and is for example placed in the boot of a vehicle.
From GB-A-2023415 a vehicle scat is known with an integrated child's safety seat which is provided with a harness-type safety belt for strapping-in a child.
DE-GM 9305570 discloses a device for fixing, in a car fitted with safety belts, an article to be carried in particular a blanket assigned to the rear seat zone, serving in particular for carrying dogs or other pets. Provision is there made for fixing on the blanket a connecting part which can be releasably connected to the associated safety belt. In its position of use, where it is connected to the safety belt, the connecting part is held on the safety belt by frictional or clamping forces.
A device for closing the intermediate space between the front seats of a motor vehicle is known from DE-GM 80 31054. This device serves to restrain passengers, in particular smaller children, situated in the rear of the vehicle on the rear bench seat. This device has a belt that can be secured on the two backrests of the front seats. A loop of the belt, which is continuously adjustable in length, can be closed by means of an easily releasable lock with a clip. The belt loop is wrapped round the mounting columns by means of which the head restraints are secured on the backrests of the front seats.
The present invention is based on the problem of creating a vehicle seat with a child's safety seat, in which arrangement there are only small design input and the space requirement for the structural components to create a child's safety seat out of the normal vehicle seat.
In accordance with the present invention, we provide a vehicle seat equipped with laterally spaced apart supporting elements to connect a headrest to the backrest of the seat, a body which is fixed or fixable between said spaced-apart head restraint supporting elements, and a child's safety seat which has a full harness type of safety belt with shoulder straps each of which has a respective first end section fixed in the zone of the backrest of the vehicle seat and projecting into said body and a respective second end section connected to a lock element for a belt lock of the full harness type of safety belt.
The body which is fixable or fixed between the spaced-apart elements connecting the 25 head restraint and the backrest preferably consists of a plastic material with a given stability of shape, but it can also have the same characteristics as upholstery. In the latter case, the body preferably consists of a synthetic foam material. The body may be designed with a front face that connects the front face of the backrest to the front face of the head restraint in an at least approximately flush manner. Such a design has the advantage that a wedge shape between the backrest and the head restraint is obviated, so that children of any weight category or body size will encounter the same 1 1 P seating conditions.
However, it is also possible for the body to be designed with a front face provided with a neck rest. Such a body is suitable in particular for adults, in which arrangement it is then of course expedient if the shoulder straps of the full harness type of safety belt can be retracted into the body. For this purpose, the body can be provided in its inside, with, for example, a conventional belt retracting device.
It is particularly advantageous if the body is designed at its front with two lateral side 10 cheeks that are spaced apart from each other. If suitably diniensioned these side cheeks form a suitable side support, for example for the head of a child. This is particularly iinportant in the case of a side collision accident. The side cheeks may be integrally formed on the body. For aesthetic reasons, it is expedient if the body is covered on all sides with a covering.
is A body of the above mentioned kind, which may be a solid foam body, or a hollow plastic body with a stable shape, or as a combined plastic hollow body with foam padding, requires only little space as compared with an independent child's safety seat. This is advantageous, in particular when the above mentioned body, or the child's safety seat, is not required in the vehicle and is for example placed in the boot of the vehicle.
To absorb in a suitable manner the impact energy in a collision of the appropriately equipped vehicle, and to reduce a possible risk of injury, it is expedient if the two first end sections of the shoulder straps of the full harness type of safety belt are connected to the two head restraint supporting elements by means of means for absorbing the impact energy, in which arrangement the energy absorbing means can be or is releasably arranged on the head restraint supporting elements. To ensure that the energy absorbing means does not become obtrusive towards the outside it may be arranged within the body through which the head restraint connecting elements extend, and from which the two shoulder straps of the full harness type of safety belt project.
The body, which may be designed as a hollow body or a solid body, is advantageously provided with two tubular elements through which the two head restraint supporting elements extend with a form fit; in such an arrangement the energy absorbing means are secured on the tubular elements. The tubular elements may be made of metal to ensure an appropriate strength or suitable energy absorbing properties. The same purpose is served if the energy absorbing means are formed by a sheet metal part which projects rearwards from the tubular elements and is bent forward with a fixing end section on which the first end sections of the two shoulder straps of the full harness type of safety belt are secured. In this way, simple energy absorbing means are obtained with optimum energy absorbing properties. It would, of course, also be possible to design the energy absorbing means with, for example, spring elements, a piston and cylinder damping device, or the like.
When a vehicle seat in accordance with the present invention is to be used as a child's safety seat, it is only necessary to release from the backrest the head restraint with its supporting elements and to secure the body with the two shoulder straps of the full harness type of safety belt on the head restraint supporting elements. Subsequently, the head restraint is again secured on the backrest, thereby obtaining simultaneously fixing of the body and securing of the two shoulder straps of the full harness type of safety belt on the vehicle seat. Since such a full harness type of safety belt can be folded together to save space, there is a negligible space requirement for the structural part, by means of which the normal vehicle seat in accordance with the invention is converted into a child's safety seat. Thus the structural part is here the body into which the shoulder straps of the full harness type of safety belt project.
The following description of embodiments of a vehicle seat with a child's safety seat, shown in the drawings in a cut-off representation, serves as a further illustration or explanation of the invention. In the drawings:Fig. 1 is a spatial representation of the backrest of a vehicle seat with a child's safety seat, wherein the head restraint with its connecting elements has been illustrated removed from the backrest, and the full harness type of safety belt of the child's safety seat has been drawn schematically only in a cut-off form; Fig. 2 is a section, along the line 111-H in Figure 1, through the head restraint and a portion of the backrest of the vehicle seat; Fig. 3 is a partly sectioned side view, similar to Figure 2, of an embodiment of a vehicle seat with a body having a flat front face and side cheeks provided between the backrest and the head restraint; and Fig. 4 is a representation, similar to Figure 3, with a body having side cheeks, whose front face is designed as a neck rest.
Figure 1 shows the backrest 10 of a vehicle seat provided with a releasable head restraint 12. Projecting downwards from the head restraint 12 are supporting elements 14 by means of which the head restraint 12 can be or is releasably connected to the backrest 10.
If a small child is to be seated on the vehicle seat the head restraint 12 is removed from the backrest 10 and a hollow body 16 is arranged on the backrest 10 or on the connecting elements 14. The two shoulder straps 18 of a full harness type of safety belt 20, that has only been schematically indicated by arrows, project from this body. In this representation, the two arrows 22 designate the lap belts of a full harness type of safety belt 20, known per se, and the arrow 24 designates the so-called crotch belt of the full harness type of safety belt 20. The two shoulder straps 18, the two lap belts 22 and the crotch belt 24 of the full harness type of safety belt 20 are releasably connected to each other by means of a belt lock 26.
At its front side, the hollow body 16 is designed with two spaced-apart lateral side cheeks 28 which form a side support for the head of a small child, for example one of weight category 1.
As shown in a sectional representation in Figure 2, the hollow body 16 is formed with 5 two tubular elements 30 through which extend, with a form fit, the supporting elements 14 by means of which the head restraint 12 of the vehicle seat is releasably connected to its backrest 10, (drawn in a cut-off representation). The two tubular elements 30 are connected to a sheet metal part 32 to which are connected the two shoulder straps 18, only one of which is visible in Figure 2 in a cut off representation. A first section 34 of the sheet metal part 32 projects rearwards from the two tubular elements 30 and is integrally followed by a second section 36 which is bent through approximately 180 angular degrees relative to the first section 34 and bent forward again. The second section 36 forms a fixing section for the two shoulder straps 18 of the full harness type of safety belt 20.
is By virtue of its design, the sheet metal part 32 forms an energy absorbing means 38 for the two shoulder straps 18 for absorbing, in a collision of the vehicle concerned, a major proportion of the impact energy. The risk of injury to a child secured on the corresponding vehicle scat by means of the full harness type of safety belt 20 is therefore reduced.
The reference numeral 28 in Figure 2 also indicates the corresponding side cheek formed on the hollow body 16, which like the backrest 10, has only been drawn in a cut-off representation. Figure 2 illustrates moreover, the mechanically firm connection of the first end section 40 of each of the shoulder straps 18 on the energy absorbing means 38, in this case on the second section 36 of the sheet metal part 32 which forms the energy absorbing means 38.
Figure 3 shows a backrest 10 in a cut off and partly sectioned representation, as well 30 as a partly sectioned head restraint 12 connected to a vehicle seat by means of two supporting column elements 14. The supporting elements 14 usually form one unit with the head restraint 12. The head restraint 12 together with the supporting elements 14 can be removed from the backrest 10. A body 16, releasably fixed on the supporting elements 14 between the head restraint 12 and the backrest 10, is designed as a solid body or as a hollow body and the shoulder straps 18 of a full harness type 5 of safety belt 20 project into it.
The body 16 is designed with a front face 42 which connects the front 44 of the backrest to the front 46 of the head restraint in an at least approximately flush manner. By means of the body 16 formed in this way, any wedge space between the backrest 10 and the head restraint 12 is obviated so that an at least approximately flat bearing surface is obtained for children of any body size.
At its front, the body 16 is designed with two lateral side.cheeks 28 that are spaced apart from each other.
Figure 4 shows another design of a vehicle seat with a body 16 which can be temporarily fixed between the backrest 10 and the head restraint 12. This body 16 is distinguished from the body 16 shown in Figure 3 in that its front face 42 is convex to form a neck rest, in particular for an adult. Otherwise the design of Figure 4 is similar to the design shown in Figure 3 so with regard to Figure 4, it is not necessary to describe in detail again all the details which in Figure 4 are designated by the same reference numerals as in Figure 3.
