Abstract

228,505. Rennerfelt, T. G. Jan. 30, 1924, [Convention date]. Locking nuts.-A self-locking nut comprises a body portion 2 having a recess at one end in which a non-metallic elastic ring 4 is accommodated, the internal diameter of which is slightly less than the diameter of the bolt. The ring 4 is held in position by a washer 5. The edges 6 of the recess in the nut are turned inwardly to prevent the washer 5 from becoming displaced. In a modification the nut 2<1>, Fig. 5, is formed from sheet metal in which an elastic member 4<1> is disposed to form the locking device. The lower edge 3<1> of the nut is shaped to cooperate with the threads of the bolt, and the upper edge 6<1> is bent over to protect the member 4<1> and hold it in position. The members 4, 4<1> may be formed of rubber, fibre, gutta-percha, balata, cork &c., and internal ribs may be provided in the body of the nut to prevent relative rotation. If there is considerable play between the bolt and the elastic member, a solution of rubber may be poured between it and the bolt, which leaves a layer of rubber adhering to the bolt threads on evaporation.
