Abstract

A nut comprises a hard metal casing 1 into which is moulded or bonded a softer core 2 which will form itself to the shape of any threaded shank within a certain range of size when tightened. The core is chamfered and pre-threaded to facilitate location and tightening. The core 2 may be made of soft metal or acrylic plastics. <IMAGE>

Description

UNIVERSAL NUT This invention relates to a nut suitable for use on bolts or threaded shanks of varying threads and gauge.
Should for example a nut be lost then it is necessary to obtain a nut to match the exact gauge and thread of the bolt or threaded shaft. This may not be known and in many instances may be difficult to measure.
The purpose of this invention it to provide a nut suitable for use on a variety of sized bolts or threaded shanks. This is achieved by inserting a soft metal or acrylic core (which may incorporate pre-threading) into a hard metal casing in the shape of an ordinary nut. The soft core may also be slightly chamfered in order facilitate location and tightening.
When the nut is tightened onto a bolt the softer core material deforms to form its own thread.
This invention allows a relatively small number of standard nut sizes to cover the full range of bolt sizes whether metric or imperial.
An example of the invention is described on the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 - shows the nut in plan form (It is shown hexagonal but could be of any other geometry. The hard case (1) nut encloses a softer material (2) which is mechanicaly bonded to the former.
Figure 2 - shows the nut in elevation - here it is no different from any standard nut.
Figure 3 - shows the nut in section. The core material is chamfered and partialy pre-threaded (3) in order to assist in location and bonding.
Figure 4 - shows the nut in section, tightened onto a bolt or threaded shank (4).

Claims (4)

1. A universal nut comprising a hard outer shell into which is securely moulded a softer core of a material which will deform and hold its shape when tightened onto a threaded shank.
2. A universal nut as claimed in claim 1 wherein chamfering is provided in order to facilitate location and tightening of the nut.
3. A universal nut as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein partial threading is provided in order to facilitate location and tightening of the nut.
4. A universal nut substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawing.
