Abstract

228,194. Schneider, L. Jan. 25, 1924, [Convention date]. Wire.-A wire is made by mechanically enclosing an electric conductor in a covering of magnetic material coated on its inner surface with a film of the conducting metal or alloy. The covering, for example a tube of soft Iron is coated electrolytically or by the action of copper sulphate. The tube is filled with copper or other conductive metal by pouring the molten metal at 1090‹ C. very slowly into the inclined tube closed at one end and maintained at a temperature of 300‹ C., the tube being subsequently carefully raised to a vertical position and the temperature allowed to drop to between 500‹ C. and 800‹ C. The filled tube is drawn by a succession of heating and drawing operations at 800‹ C. In the finished cable the copper core has a thickness of about 4 mm. and the covering about 6 mm.
