Abstract

The speech coil of a moving coil electroacoustic instrument, such as a loud-speaker, is formed of a flat strip conductor wound upon itself in a flat spiral, the width of the strip being parallel to the axis of the resulting coil and adjacent turns being insulated from one another by a thin film of an oxide of the metal of which the conductor is composed. Thus, if the strip is of copper, the insulating film is formed by dipping the strip in nitric acid and subsequently heating it to produce a copper oxide surface, whilst, if it is of aluminium, the oxide can be formed by electrolysis using a solution of silicate of soda as the electrolyte.
